Never Was

Haven't missed you in a long time...
How quickly love can turn to hate...
But there are moments, though fleeting
The truth of our relationship I must debate
At first we talked for hours
On topics you knew would impress me
Wasn't long before we hardly talked at all
Just a few words that might undress me...

Southern man, gentle, though no gentleman
Silver tongued to the bitter end
When all was said and done I knew it was never love
But I thought at least you had been my friend

Wisdom must come late since from experience born
That shows me how less than even friendship "love" was
My heart may not have seen it
But mournfully now my mind does...
And now I wish this "love" we had
Never was.. just never was
